Tall Paintings for Narrow Walls: Choosing a Size from 16×20 to 40×60 for Hallways, Doorways and Entryways

There is a slim stretch of wall in almost every home: the strip between a door and a corner, the wall beside a window, the hallway where nothing wider than a picture frame will fit. A wide canvas is out of the question, and a small square one looks like an afterthought. What the spot wants is height, and our tall-format original paintings are made for it. The catch is that "tall" covers eight very different sizes, so the question is which one.

Choose by width first, then height

On a narrow wall, the width is the number that can go wrong, because the wall will not give you any more of it. Height is usually the flexible one. So measure the clear width of the wall, from the edge of the door trim or the corner to the next obstacle, and treat it as your limit. A common decorating habit is to leave a few inches of breathing room on each side so the painting does not look wedged in; that is a general guideline, not a rule from our studio, so trust your eye.

Here are the eight sizes offered on our tall-format paintings, listed by width so you can read them against your measurement. Every size is shown in inches with centimeters in parentheses.

Size (width × height) Proportion Frameless price
16×20 in (40×50 cm) 4:5, nearly square $134.99
20×24 in (50×60 cm) 5:6, gently tall $185.99
24×30 in (60×75 cm) 4:5 $237.99
24×36 in (60×90 cm) 2:3, slender $288.99
30×40 in (75×100 cm) 3:4 $382.99
32×48 in (80×120 cm) 2:3, slender $464.99
36×48 in (90×120 cm) 3:4 $567.99
40×60 in (100×150 cm) 2:3, slender $774.99

The pair that most people overlook: 24×30 and 24×36

Two sizes share a 24-inch (60 cm) width: the 24×30 and the 24×36. If your wall is the kind that stops you at about two feet, the choice between them is only about height. The 24×36 is a true 2:3 vertical, noticeably more elongated, and it adds $51 over the 24×30 in the Frameless finish ($288.99 versus $237.99). It makes sense when you have a tall ceiling or a long run of wall, such as a hallway or the space beside a staircase. The 24×30 is the calmer choice for a lower wall or a spot with a shelf or console beneath it.

The same logic repeats at the other end. The 32×48 and 36×48 share a 48-inch height, but the 36×48 is four inches wider and reads as a more solid, almost portrait-style rectangle. If you want drama without taking much horizontal space, the 2:3 sizes (24×36, 32×48 and 40×60) are the slim ones.

Which paintings suit a tall, narrow spot

Not every tall painting was composed for a doorway, but some say so outright. Our Emerald Wilds listing describes its vertical composition as especially suited to entryways, bedrooms, reading corners and narrow statement walls, with layered turquoise, emerald and charcoal that shift with the light. Terra is tagged for the entryway and living room: weathered browns, stone greys and warm umber in a raw, tactile texture, which sits well beside wood, plaster and stone. Wildflower Meadow goes the other way, a soft impressionist field of daisies and poppies, tagged for bedroom and living room walls.

If you want something with more personality, The Majestic Lion is a tall portrait in gold, amber and deep blue that makes a single confident statement on a slim wall. All four are original, hand-painted works on artist linen canvas, each with a certificate of authenticity, and small differences from handwork are part of the deal.

Pick the finish for how you will hang it

Every size comes as Rolled Canvas, Frameless or Custom Frame. For a 24×36 in (60×90 cm) painting those are $204.99, $288.99 and $368.99. Rolled Canvas ships in a protective tube with a 2 to 5 inch white border, so you will need to stretch or frame it yourself. Frameless arrives stretched on a wooden frame with no outer frame, ready to hang. Custom Frame arrives framed and ready to hang. For a narrow wall, Frameless keeps things simple: the footprint is the canvas itself, with no outer frame to account for. If you choose Custom Frame, check the product page and leave a little extra room. Our guide to the three finishes goes deeper on the trade-offs.

A quick way to decide

  • Measure the clear wall width, then pick the largest listed width that still leaves a few inches on each side.
  • With that width fixed, choose the height from your ceiling and what sits below the painting.
  • Choose the painting for the mood of the space, and the finish for how you want to hang it.

Each painting is hand-painted to order, so allow 2 to 3 weeks for delivery. If your wall needs a size that is not listed, message us through the contact page, as some listings such as Aurora Depths note. You can browse every option in our Tall Format Paintings collection.
