Nativity framed canvas wall art with a light wood frame, Holy Family and lamb Christmas scene, shown in a styled room

Framed or Gallery-Wrapped? Choosing a Christmas Canvas by Frame, Size and Spot on the Wall

You have picked a Christmas scene you love, and now the page asks a second question: do you want it framed, or on a gallery-wrapped canvas with no outer frame? In our shop that choice also decides the size, the shape and the price, so it is worth a minute before you order.

What each option actually is

Framed canvases are printed canvas wall art with a wood-grain frame in either light wood or black wood. Each one has a depth of 1.5 inches and comes in a single size, so there is no menu to scroll: the Nativity with the curious lamb is 24 × 36 inches in a light wood frame, and the Santa and reindeer diner scene is 40 × 20 inches in a black wood frame.

Gallery-wrapped canvases are printed canvas on a wood stretcher, also 1.5 inches deep, with no decorative outer frame. The picture wraps around the edge instead. Our listings for these, such as The Gingerbread Architect, say hanging hardware is included and offer two sizes: 12 × 18 and 16 × 24 inches.

Both are printed artwork. The painterly texture you see is part of the printed image, not raised paint, and none of them light up.

The numbers side by side

Option Sizes we list Shape Price today
Gallery-wrapped, no outer frame 12 × 18 in Portrait $34.99
Gallery-wrapped, no outer frame 16 × 24 in Portrait $44.99
Framed, light or black wood 24 × 36 in Portrait $99.99
Framed, light or black wood 40 × 20 in Wide, 2:1 $114.99

One honest caveat: the framed canvases are also much larger, so the gap in price is not the cost of the frame alone. If you want a framed look on a smaller budget, the practical comparison is the 16 × 24 gallery-wrapped canvas against the 24 × 36 framed one, and then your wall decides.

Start with the wall, not the frame

The two framed shapes do different jobs.

24 × 36 inches, portrait. This is the one for a narrow stretch: beside a doorway, at the end of a hall, above a bedroom dresser or at the side of a bed. The Nativity scene is tagged for bedrooms on its listing, which suits a quiet scene.

40 × 20 inches, wide. This is a 2:1 rectangle, and it wants a long horizontal spot: above a sideboard or console, above a sofa that sits against a short wall, or over a kitchen or dining bench. The Santa diner scene is tagged for kitchen and dining rooms for exactly that reason. Measure the space first and leave breathing room on each side; a 40-inch-wide piece looks cramped in a 44-inch gap.

If your wall is small, or you want to group several pieces, the gallery-wrapped 12 × 18 and 16 × 24 sizes are easier to arrange and easier to move when the holiday ends.

Light wood or black wood?

Choose by the room around it, not by the picture alone.

  • Light wood softens a scene and sits comfortably with pale walls, natural wood furniture and neutral rugs. Our light wood framed Christmas canvases include the Nativity, the Burgundy Bow and Evergreen piece, Every Mitten Found Its Match and Winter in the Greenhouse.
  • Black wood gives a crisper outline and holds its own against dark furniture, deep wall colors or a bold gallery wall. Black wood framed options include The Christmas Tree Takes the Elevator, Santa Takes a Fishing Break and the Nutcracker chess scene.

Both are described on the listings as wood-grain frames, so expect a wood-look finish rather than a painted-flat one.

A quick way to decide

  1. Do you have a wall bigger than about two feet across and want it to look finished the day it arrives? Choose a framed canvas.
  2. Is the space small, or is the piece one of several? Choose gallery-wrapped.
  3. Is the piece a gift for someone whose home you have not seen? A framed canvas in light wood is the more neutral of the two framed finishes, though this is a judgment call, not a rule.
  4. Do you want the same picture to move from the Christmas mantel to a hallway in January? Either works; the gallery-wrapped canvas is the lighter lift.

Timing

Our canvas prints are made to order, with normal production of 3 to 5 business days and shipping counted separately. Most US orders arrive within 5 to 7 days, and holiday shipping can add a few extra days, so order before the last week of the season rather than during it. Our FAQ covers cancellations and returns if you want to check them first.
